A-Basin Will Not Open Today - Thursday

Due to extreme avalanche concerns A-Basin and Highway 6 over Loveland Pass will not be opening today. We are working closely with CDOT to manage this challenging situation. For updates today, pay attention to our website and my blog.

Crazy. How many times has this happened in the past few seasons?

Trust me, avalanche conditions are extreme. The professor and widow maker avalanche slide paths simply present too great a risk to cars on US Highway 6. Any car caught in a natural slide would likely prove fatal to any occupants in the vehicle, and since one has to cross both avalanche slide paths to reach Arapahoe Basin from Keystone, it just isn't worth the risk.

Don't worry, the new snow will still be there tomorrow. Tomorrow (Friday) will be a ski/ride day to remember. Justlet the avalanche risk to Highway 6 be mitigated first so people can get to/from A-Basin safely.

So if you wanna die just hit the backcountry guys!

I would think the Professor is very unstable. CDOT is way behind the curve, best to let them catch-up before there is a real tragedy.

CAIC says it all...

You want to die today, go ride anything over 30

Dont get upset. Just wait until tomorrow. Patrol has to traverse that terrain. They need time.

Thanks for keeping it safe! The snow will definitely be waiting for us! I remember that happening about 12 years ago or so in April. The day after when you opened again was one of the most epic days of skiing in my memory! Waist deep POW awaited us when you opened the next day! Stay safe and live to ski another day!

Thank you Al and CDOT for trying to keep us safe. When this clears I bet we see some historic slides and new paths where there used to trees

Hey Al,

Is there anyway in the future that Abasin, CAIC and CDOT can communicate and decide on closures before 8:30? I think it would help alleviate confusion and hazard on US 6 due to the number of people that have to turn around/leave Abasin on days like this.

Wow, I am extra glad I didn't even try to go yesterday because I thought traffic would be bad. The whole place was and is still closed? Hopefully good conditions next week at least!
