New Device - Compaction Roller

Our newest mechanical contraption arrived last week. It is called a compaction roller. Our winch cat operators will lower it down steeper terrain early season when the snow is relatively shallow. The impact is similar to early season ski cutting or foot packing. The device breaks up snow slabs and compacts loose, early season snow. This will be a great tool for our Ski Patrollers and Snow Cat Operators preparing our trails for opening. Telluride and a few other areas have been using similar devices for several years. I think the Telluride crew invented it.

And she shall be called "the slab buster". Hopefully it has a longer life than tellurides first prototype !

Will this device help the Montezuma Bowl open earlier? :-)

Maybe sooner. Certainly a little easier and cleaner. The primary objective enables us to capitalize better on early season storms.

I was visiting on Monday and saw that in the parking lot, I honestly thought it was used for summer maintenance, not winter work. The inner nerd in me had to do some research on it and found a white paper from Telluride: http://arc.lib.montana.edu/snow-science/objects/issw-1998-348-351.pdf.

@Unknown Thanks for the link! I googled Snow Compaction Telluride to no avail, but that whitepaper satiated my nerdy thirst!

Okay, that's it! I'm giving up my day job - I want to be on the compacting crew using that machine :)

How hateful of you to rob Ski Patrol of their primary early-season exercise! Now those guys will have to sit in the bar and watch this machine take their jobs, just as is happening to so many other workers across the country today with the Robot Revolution!

I can't begin to explain how excited I am to see this. Tride and WP have both had great success with these machines. I'm eager to see how it plays out at The Legend.

I got my September day in last weekend at St. Mary's glacier...looking forward to some lift-serviced runs next month!
