AHHHH.......Steep Gullies

The Steep Gullies opened Wednesday. I had the pleasure of skiing The 2nd SG. The upper quarter was extremely difficult. I had to tip toe through some very challenging and steep snow and rocks. The lower three quarters were absolutely beautiful, steep skiing. To finish it off I had a quiet skin back to the bottom of Pali.

The Steep Gullies are the most difficult terrain at The Basin. Extreme Terrain is defined by the Colorado Ski Safety Act as:

"Extreme Terrain" means any place within the ski area boundary that contains cliffs with a minimum twenty-foot rise over a fifteen-foot run, and slopes with a minimum fifty-degree average pitch over a one-hundred-foot run.

The Steep Gullies definitely meet this definition. Extreme Terrain is not about moguls or trees or rocks. It is about steepness and cliffs.

OK but the sign in the picture reads +/- 40 degree pitch, while the extreme terrain definition is average of 50 degree or more pitch. Maybe this is a function of the prefab signs available. Is it actually 50 degree or steeper pitch? If not, this is way too easy for me... ;)

Skied #1 today. Very techy and narrow in spots. Love it! Thanks to all involved in getting that terrain open safely!

I'm jealous - I skied AB 1979-1982 got in something like 260 days over that time. My son is now in Summit County skiing AB and he turned me on to Al's Blog. The Zuma lift and now the Beaver's lift well like I said I'm jealous. I still have my "SKI THE LEGEND" button from 1980. My best memory is getting in virgin runs - waist deep - on Slalom Slope. Later that day on Standard - we stopped half way down took a safety break and I declared "we have died and gone to heaven".

Can the steep gullies be skied by stepping around rocks and skiing? Or do the cliffs require mandatory airs?

^ agreed. There may or may not be mandatory airs in the Steep Gullies depending on the day.

How do the gullies compare to the 1st notch in terms of difficulty?
