We Are Opening Today

The race to be the first to open in Colorado and the country is always a treat. Vail has announced that Keystone is opening tomorrow. I know Loveland is right on their tail. Congratulations to both resorts.

We are proud to announce that we will open Black Mountain Express today, Friday, October 11, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM. There will be $15 lift tickets, $5 beers and $5 apres ski dishes in the 6th Alley. Starting tomorrow, we will be open with normal operating hours. Mug Club sales begin Saturday.

Our team has done an extraordinary job making snow, grooming snow, getting the annual tramway licenses, hiring staff, training staff, etc. etc. etc. We have been having fun. I can't wait to get my skis on. As I write, the cat drivers are putting the finishing touches on the snow. The lift ops and the ski patrollers are getting their gear in order. The staff gets an A+ for this one.

Today we will be hosting an extraordinary Friday Afternoon Club. Come join us for a few turns, a quick bite and a beverage with friends. Ski season is here. Thanks so much for being part of Arapahoe Basin.

Congrats. Great job all around. I'll see you in the morning

This really shows how much ego is more important than the product. Just wait until tomorrow and have a regular opening.

Anonymous said...

this so petty. love to see it. congrats to alterra!

Anonymous said...

YES! AMERICA!!!!!

David said...

Vail resorts: let's spend millions on snow making ops to make Arapahoe basin pay for leaving vail resorts and take away their title of first ski area

Arapahoe basin: that's cool we opened at 3

Anonymous said...

While I love A-Bay that's just petty.

Anonymous said...

How lame. Let's open for two hours so we can take away the first to open from Keystone.

Nick Esker said...

This is legendary! Another Vail fail :)

Anonymous said...

All the Trolls should make their way back under their bridges. Petty? Really? On what basis? Really think the product would be that much better tomorrow? It's a white ribbon of death. The product will be bad either way.

But WE'RE skiing!!!! LEGGOOOOOO

Anonymous said...

I've been waiting patiently since July 4th! Thanks Al! See you all tomorrow!

Anonymous said...

Awesome! Sticking it to the man!

Anonymous said...

Not petty at all. It's a race. And VR just got pwned.

Cheers to the start of another great season!

Anonymous said...

Keystone has opened in the past first by turning the lights and opening in the morning. Petty is the name of the game

Anonymous said...

impressive moves by Alterra and IKON! Congrats to Al and the whole IKON team!

Anonymous said...

This is really petty. Shame on you and Louis, who seems to be the driving force behind this. Thought you were both better than this - apparently not.

Anonymous said...

Hey vail employee. How does ego have anything to do with this. The product is on the ground and ready..

Anonymous said...

Petty? for sure.
Love it anyway? yup.

You guys rock! What a move. Anyone who makes it up there is definitely in for a treat! NOT petty at all -you have the rights to announce an opening whenever the hell you want. Maybe Al and the crew just wanted to go skiing???

Anonymous said...

This is amazing XD

Anonymous said...

Petty? Who cares? It's just a game, all in good fun, and ABasin rules!

Anonymous said...

Hahaha so much negativity here!
Why is anyone cheering for Vail Resorts?
This is a brilliant PR move!

Always been a big fan of the Basin and this Friday afternoon opening just makes me like it more!

Anonymous said...

Not sure where the negativity is coming from. It's a fun race to open! I was happy to hear Keystone was opening tomorrow and I am also happy to hear A-Bay is opening today at 3:30pm. Let's all have fun this season!

Anonymous said...

WIll uphilling be available this weekend?

Colorado Dad said...

I am loving this competition!

Usually A-Basin spends 1-2 days of grooming, with Al taking some obligatory test runs the day before opening just to make sure everything is good. So this is _really_ pushing it. But why not! It's about time some real competition puts the fire under someone's toes!

Is this the second earliest opening ever?

Anonymous said...

It's not Alterra, they do not own or operate Abasin, they are solely a pass partner. It's always been a race to open, it's friendly competition and fun to ski the little guy win.

Anonymous said...

Bitter Epic pass holders are hilarious!

Anonymous said...

congrats to alterra, ikon, and the whole abay team!

coo said...

This is hilarious and I love it. Would it also be "petty" if Keystone decided to open at 3:00 today? The whiners are only whining because they lost the bragging rights they spent so much money to buy.

Jay said...

Who give a S$&@ let’s just ski/ride and enjoy!!

Kenny said...

Al is basically the Patrick Mahomes of snow. He just threw a no look TD on Vail

ReillyK said...

pretty funny to see the butt hurt Fail Resorts Fans, keep sucking up to old robby boy over there in corporate, A-bay isn't letting keystone get that title or first to open no matter how much you spent in new snow making equipment hahaha

this is pettiness at its finest and I absolutely love it lol

Mr.flame_hair said...

Still 15 dollar lift tickets tomorrow?

Never is until more runs are opened.

What? What does IKON have to do with the operation of this hill?

I love it Al!! Enjoy the WROD everyone, whether at Keystone or at A-Bay.

Anonymous said...

Yessss! Time to ski! Congrats A-Basin! My only sadness is that I can't leave work early enough to ski today.

Anonymous said...

Hope your not serious. I assume your not.

Wild Bill P said...

Come on now everyone knows its a race to get first tracks! And if it take a 2 hr day to do it? I'm all for it.
Hell back in my day we skied 275 days in on year. So news like this?? waked my winker right up.

CoCo said...

Way to go BILL !

God. With all of these people commenting above sking and riding at summit hills this snow season, does anyone of you want to buy my house in Whispering Pines? I want to move to Jackson asap

T.J. Burke said...

This is outrageous!

Awesome stuff Al! Thanks for getting the hill open for us all!

Really pathetic and obvious ploy opening for 2 hours today.

Meier Skis said...

Congrats Al and A-Basin! It's great to see another season kick off and love seeing you guys push it.

Anonymous said...

LMAO AL YOU ABSOLUTE MADMAN

Anonymous said...

Imagine being pro vail. Yikes dawg. Congrats Al. A-Basin became even more legendary with this move!

Anonymous said...

Don't feed the trolls....Great job A Basin team!!! People are silly if they would have taken a few minutes to really read Al's earlier blog where he stated he is pacing furiously to avoid bugging employees as they get their operations ready to open.... Come on people read between the lines he gave you a HUGE hint they were trying to open today... Yeesh with negativity. Enjoy the season everyone and relax. Congrats to Keystone and Loveland as well. People need to chillax with their trolling.

Checkmate. Way to go A-Basin!

Still the Legend, way to go Al and the crew! I skied A-Bay in October last season. The Moose from Columbia Ski Club, Maryland

Anonymous said...

Childish, petty, and unsportsmanlike. We all know the legend would not be open today if it wasn't for keystone announcement. Same mentality of holding back information on the Ikon until well into season pass sales, so not surprising. The Legend is a great product no question, which is why still buy it while holding my nose.

Anonymous said...

We're out of town now, but will be back in time for next weekend. Bought Ikon passes this year after just buying Loveland passes last year and feeling really cheated (they bragged about opening early, but then ended their season well before other resorts).

Anonymous said...

Well played Legend......this race has always been about ski area pride, and now because someone other than Loveland Ski Area is involved it's petty.....stay classy #Legend
Prolly won't see one Icon pass scanned this weekend either, who would waste 1 of the 7 days Basin days allowed on Icon pass before January.

Stu Dearnley said...

Everything about this makes me happy. Especially all of the Anonymous haters whose days were ruined. The Legend For the Win!

Anonymous said...

Early season sucks no matter what. Petty my ass. Get it a-bay.

Swan said...

Love to see A-Basin stick it to Vail.

Anonymous said...

This is interesting to watch from the east! Just go have fun! Way to go Al!

aaron said...

Woo!!! Way to go. Like other people said, it's a RACE TO OPEN and the basin just won. It's in no way petty (trolls all over this thing. why are you even commenting on a ski blog?). Just like keystone used to do by turning on their lights a few hours before sunrise so they could beat loveland, it's PR. Ski season is here!

Unknown said...

Will there be a park?

Erik said...

Really love seeing you all beat Vail/Keystone, even if it is by only ~16 hours. Gave me a good laugh. Won't be up there this weekend, but I'll see you all next week.

Anonymous said...

F*cking Awesome A Bay!

The Legend.

VR = the joke

Ha! Love it, see ya'll tomorrow!

You are either a winner or a loser. Abasin won the first to open competition!
Great job! Looking at the webcam, a lot of people are enjoying themselves.
Great for the sport.

I'm a BIG fan of both ABasin and Breck (esp. the alpine bowls). Ski Keystone not so much anymore, but I'm delighted they have upped their snow-making infrastructure and have seriously committed to early season openings. (Crazy, but I have both ABasin and VR passes.) Opening for two hours today strikes me as a bit, er, "odd". But carry on! It's all fun...

Thomas said...

It was a great day! Thanks for letting us get some turns in.

Anonymous said...

I imagine next year that Keystone will open first without any announcement at all. Congratulations to Colorado. Does not matter which ski area we are talking about. All things considered, Colorado rules the ski universe.

manx said...

Not cool closing ten minutes early at 5:20 when you advertised across the social media that closing would be 5:30. Very epic move and not ikonik. I really would have liked one more one and alpenglow didn't even hit until 6:30 tonight. Really disappointed with that vailish move. The conditions were great and the weather was perfect this afternoon.

wanderman said...

Stats concerning the snowmaking race.
Black Mountain: 10,800 bottom, 11,500 top, 700 vert.
Montezuma: 10,000 bottom, 11,600 top, 1,600 vert.
Keystone apparently did buy and install more power, pipes, and pumps this summer in order to cover 900 additional vert in the same time that ABasin covered 700 vert (assuming run widths are about the same). Congrats to both. All things considered, Colorado rules the ski universe.

======================> AMAZING <========================

Glad that those losers at keystone will have to revise their press releases!

All in good fun for everyone.
"If ya ain't first, you're last"

They aren't the little guy. Wolf, monarch and the mountains that don't partner with big passes are the little guys. Basin is more concerned with marketing and hype these days it seems.

Anonymous said...

Ikon pass holder. Announced opening mid day just "win" is not the norm and you know it. Seems they are more concerned with marketing than anything. Maybe they learned this from Vail. I'll still be giving them my money in March/April/May but this was all leadership ego.

Anonymous said...

I think that's the point

Anonymous said...

It's a meaningless title and the competition is fun/entertaining for us. Did we really benefit from either spot opening this early? No.... stop complaining and learn to laugh.

Anonymous said...

It's so obvious that this was strictly for bragging rights. Down right pathetic really. I never liked a bay much, but now it's pretty obvious who is butt hurt about the split. Way to show your true colors boys. Cool two hour opening day I guess, at the last minute, right after Keystone said they were opening. Not a coincidence at all huh Al?

Bruce said...

I can't believe there is so much ire in these comments. Let's just be happy multiple resorts got to open this early. It's looking to be a great ski season, so enjoy. :)

anonevermore said...

Quite lame, beneath a basin to pull stupid stunt like this

Unknown said...

Unfortunately I was unable to access the site yesterday but I amazed at the jealousy and petty comments. All I can say is one of the best times of the day is late afternoon. Great light, beautiful sunsets, and a few turns! What better way to end the day and kickoff the weekend?

This brings publicity for the entire industry. It also shuts up those that have said for the past 40 years it would never snow again and skiing was doomed.

Look at it this way. Several results are opening this weekend many which would not have normally opened until late Nov or even Dec. Think of all the jobs, the money pouring into the local economy, and survival of ski resorts. Everyone wins no matter whose first!!

Congrats Al and team. Great job! Good luck to all the resorts. Here's to a great season and hoping we're up to our necks in snow in the next few weeks.

Great work Mr. Al and crew! See ya soon, Lb.

RUDOLPH ALBACH said...

Congratulations Al, Arapahoe Basin Crew and all!
The news is very exciting!

It was nice meeting you last year, Al, as I was busy scraping snow and spreading salt at the base. Lol

I am so looking forward to this season and to another opportunity to ski/work the mountains.

All the way from INDIANA, thank you again for last season's opportunity for employment and the behind the scenes work experience that makes skiing some gnarly terrain of the mountains possible.

While my work here in Indiana is keeping me local most of the time, I am without a doubt definitely planning & looking forward to another work trip out that way this season.

As of yesterday afternoon, I could have been on the road to British Columbia, but had to turn it down due to work that is keeping me local for now.

Aside from all of the hype and necessary drama ALONG WITH ALL THE EXTREMELY HARD WORK that is the driving force behind the downhill skiing culture(subculture) & what not,
I will always think of Arapahoe Basin and its crew as
MY MOUNTAIN HOME.

Thanks again for the opportunity!

You guys & gals rock!!!⛷️

Please, if you’re taking the time to blast A Basin or any other resort for opening up, then you are a negative ass punk and you’ll be laughed off the mountain. Stay away or park on the highway but keep the negativity to yourself. Ha. To the true blue riders who made it out- Rip it up!

Love it Al & A-Basin! Good on you for working to take the trophy for first opening in Colorado once again. You should be proud. Nothing petty about friendly competition. And you were very gracious in your email. Keep up the good work. From an old friend and student of your from 1995. Quintin Galt

Who cares about the 2 hours and the 15$ throwback lift ticket prices. It's abasin and it was great!

What everyone should really by upset about is that Nate_Dogggg did not get first chair. That's the real issue here!
