Spring Snow

The snow certainly has the look and feel of Spring. There is no sign of Lake Reveal.

Last year on this day i was tearing around Arapahoe with my beautiful girlfreind having a killer day in the sun. We got lunch on the deck and i had a bacon bloody mary. Jump forward a year 2020. No girl and no skiing and no 6th alley bloody mary. Dam what a difference a year can make! Always count your blessings.

A new study has found an association between low levels of vitamin D and high numbers of COVID-19 cases and mortality rates across 20 European countries. The research, led by Dr. Lee Smith of Anglia Ruskin University, was published in the Aging Clinical and Experimental Research journal.

Previous research has indicated vitamin D plays a role in modulating acute respiratory infections by preventing white blood cells from over reacting to the infection by releasing too many inflammatory cytokines.

So we should stay locked indoors in a dark room and not go spring skiing in the sun? Seems that in NYC 66% of the hospitalizations after stay at home order occurred in people that were staying at home. HMMMM

Al

I'm not sure if this has been covered/answered in a previous blog...But does being closed preserve or hurt the snowpack as far as melting for a later reopening? I would assume compaction of the snow has some sort of effect on its rate of melting?

Thanks for your insight!

They are farming the snow in the base area; giving the run off some place to go… I think the closer order ends on Friday 5/22/2020; if this order is not extended by the governor then I think ABasin will reopen starting the last week in May

The bigger concern is Summit County. The Governor is taking input from them. And even if he does let the ban expire without adding more time, the county can still keep it closed.

Not having people compacting the snow makes it melt faster, and if we get fresh snow, it is more likely to blow away. They can pile up the snow at the base to make it not melt as fast though. Compacted snow lasts much longer

Sad to see Molly Hogan chair start to get taken down today. That chair served such intense terrain.

Al, is there any word about if the Basin can open for uphill access possibly before or instead of a full opening of the resort this spring?
