A-Basin Will Be Closed Sunday

Arapahoe Basin will be closed starting tomorrow, Sunday, March 15 for an undetermined amount of time. I will make a detailed post later this evening.

I feel like the person in this photo.

Sad to see but definitely the right call. CEO of Berkshire East summarized it well, no skiing is worth lives.

what about uphill access?

Good call. Uphill access?

Good call, tough as it is. I was on a shuttle bus down to the Whiskey lot last week and it was should to shoulder. Not worth it!

Al, I can only imagine how tough that decision was to make - and announce. We had a blast at The Legend today and hope to make it back yet this season. If not, I know it will be because of Abasin’s true concern for the current situation we’re all facing. Thank you for all you do.

What do I do with the rentals in my possession to be returned tomorrow end of day?

Will there be a prorated rate on the season pass?

Hang in there Alan. It's a very, very tough call and one that is going to come with pain for a lot of people, but it's the right call. Swallowing this bitter pill now will make this whole nightmare shorter.

How about refunds for 4 paks?

You really had no choice, Al. It is the correct decision. Stay safe.

So saddened to hear this, for A Basin and for us. Understandable.

We understand and support your decision.
Hang in there, we love A-Basin, your employees, and fellow skiers.

We'll be back and ready to support you all when it all makes sense again to get out skiing again.

The picture defines the whole skiing world/community right now.

Ski to die

Chris said...

60 to 80 thousand people die of the flu every year in the US. That's 330-440 people A DAY during the flu season. Aren't we all overreacting just a little bit?

This is the only decision that could be made, thank you Al and God Bless you and your family!

Unfortunate news. Skiing on a mountain is not a place of high risk and closing is taking away mountain fitness and needed diversion. This hysteria is coercing businesses to make fear based decisions, rather than sound decisions. Sorry Al, this must be challenging to say the least. What can we do to bring the Basin back on line?

Wrong call, close the gondola, sit 2 on 4 chairs, 3 on 6 chairs, people are arriving for spring break, no skiing 4 anyone

Don't ask don't tell

Sorry guys but take advantage of your time here. Drive to Moab and check out one of the coolest places on earth and enjoy Colorado too. Everyone is frustrated.

This was by order of the governor of CO. Resorts had no choice.

Ken finger, ur special, there is no gondola at Arapahoe basin act right stupid

Where is this order? Copper, Aspen and some others still open; there was no such order.

They don't all get the flu all at once. That's the situation that all of these measures are designed to avoid: overload of the healthcare system. That could be catastrophic particularly for the 5-10% who are critically affected by COVID-19 (and need to be on ventilators, etc). Also, remember that death isn't the only adverse outcome... slowing the spread of SARS-CoV-2 is in everyone's best interest.

Al .... this is Brad no big deal but I am training on our MT. and this hurts can we do up hill?

Colorado is under a declared State of Emergency. Closures impact all Colorado resorts.

Those complaining now about not being able to ride, are tomorrow's complainers who will complain that there aren't enough Covid-19 tests available to test them and that the tests are taking too long. (They cut off testing in Denver today after they were flooded with people with doctor's orders to get tested, and tests are taking longer to process than expected due to high demand)

The same complainers will be the ones complaining that they can't get one of the limited hospital beds in Summit County (there really aren't at all enough beds for a rush of spring breakers to get sick while here on spring break. Go count them if you doubt.)

Complainers will complain. The reality is what the reality is. We're going to have to buck up and feel lucky that our first-world problem is that we can't ride for a bit after getting in an AMAZING season of riding so far!!!!

The dude saying Abasin should close the "gondola" is a professional complainer. Find a different sport.

Ken, shut up. It's a respiratory illness spread by regular breathing or coughing, nanoparticles that are EASILY inhaled within a 6 foot proximity, or absorbed through the mucus membranes in your eyes and mouth. This is not like any pandemic in our lifetimes and ignorance is what is going to make it 1000x worse than what it already is.

Hey A Basin - this is the right move & thank you!

I do NOT want any refund on any portion of my season pass, I support you.

Stay healthy!

This was the right call. Please use some of the money you've already collected from passes to continue to pay AB workers who will now have zero income so they can afford to stay in town during the shutdown and be ready to get back to work as soon as this is over...
