If you have been skiing The Basin the last week, you have seen a number of wet avalanches both inside and outside the area. The above average spring snow coupled with very warm spring temperatures have created conditions ideal for these slides to occur. We very aggressively manage areas where we think these slides might occur. Explosives have proven to have minimal effectiveness with wet slides. As we think these spring slide conditions are developing, we close avalanche prone areas. This sometimes causes angst for some of our guests when an area still has lots of snow, but it is closed. We understand the frustration, but feel the closures are warranted.
