The Ski Patrol continues their hard work prepping The East Wall. More routes, more hand charges, more avalauncher rounds, more snow pits, more hiking, more ski cuts, more signs, more toboggans, more, more, more, more. I think the next 48 hours will be pivotal. Keep your eye on The Wall.

Willy's Wide

As I write, four ski patrollers are doing avalanche work in Willy's Wide (named after Colorado Ski Hall of Famer Willy Schaeffler). The patrollers hiked the ridge to North Pole and continued around the back and on up to the top of Willy's. It is a pretty long, tough hike through deep snow. It looks like we will have several days of high pressure and blue skies. These are ideal conditions to prepare the East Wall for opening. Keep your eye on the North Pole zone, Willy's, The Tree Chutes, and The Traverse. We are making big progress.

Summit Cup

Sunday, The Summit Foundation and Team Summit hosted the Summit Cup at A-Basin. The event brought together more than 100 young, local free skiers for a Mogul Event on Lower International and a Big Mountain Event on The Nose. Spirits were high and good fun was had by all. One of my favorite things has always been watching young people catch the bug of sliding downhill on snow. Very cool.

East Wall

Good start to the storm, 4" new this morning.

Obviously, the East Wall is starting to look pretty good. With  4" of new snow today and more in the forecast the next few days, the outlook is bright. You will continue to see lots of patrol activity out there with ski cutting and explosives in North Pole and The Tree Chutes and avalauncher use high in the middle portion of the Wall. So, my official East Wall opening date statement has changed from "I don't know" to "Fairly soon." Stay tuned, I am feeling pretty good about this.
