Taos and Kachina Peak

This past weekend Kay and I went to Taos. We stayed with and caught up with old friends. The skiing was very fun.  Saturday, we enjoyed many, many runs riding the new Kachina Peak chair. Sunday it snowed all day long and we found lots of fluff in Wild West Glade, Ernie's Run and a few other places. Late that day we found untouched steep stuff after making the West Basin hike. What would a trip to Taos be without a great sunset and blue corn enchiladas in town. Perfection.

They reported 22" of snow after we left. Don't forget that A-Basin pass is good for 3 days at Taos.

Pali Just Right

I had a very nice afternoon yesterday. First, I skied several laps on Pali finding especially good snow on The Spine, The Face and Standard. After that I wandered down Slalom Slope and back to Montezuma Bowl, again finding great skiing, especially in Black Bear. We reported 2" more new snow today bringing this storm total to 14". Conditions are outstanding. For the last 3 months everyone has been saying "Skiing is great for this time of year." Now we are simply saying "Skiing is great."

Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment - CRAD

Someone asked what the piles of snow were for at the bottom of The East Wall. We are hosting an avalanche rescue dog seminar for CRAD this week. The piles are part of the training grounds. 17 dogs and their handlers and a number of Avalanche Techs are taking part in the exercise. Representatives from many Colorado ski areas and rescue groups are here. CRAD combines skilled dogs and humans with the aid of a Flight for Life helicopter for rapid deployment creating an opportunity for a successful rescue. A very impressive program run by a group of dedicated professionals.

.........And we had a foot of snow the last two days and it is dumping right now.

.........And don't forget the Beacon Bowl is this Saturday, February 6.

.........And the skiing was incredible today.
