A Successful Snowmaking Season is Complete

One of the hardest parts of my job is dealing with bad rumors.  This season there were a lot of bad rumors about snowmaking.  They tended to be something like "A-Basin is out of water" or "A-Basin can't make snow".  Most of you know those rumors were complete BS.

Mark LaFlamme and his crew have just completed a very successful snowmaking season under very challenging conditions.  It is no secret that streamflows in Colorado have been lower than we would like.  That does impact snowmaking.  Despite the challenges, A-Basin was able to make snow on 90+% of the acres where we normally make snow.  It might have taken a little bit longer than normal and we had to get creative a few times, but snowmaking for this season was successful.

In the very complicated world of water law and water regulations, every year we have to stop diverting water for snowmaking December 31.  So, we are done making snow this season.  After a productive snowmaking season, good December snowfall and good ski conditions right now, I am very excited about skiing at The Basin.

Lastly, if you ever hear one of those crazy, stupid rumors, let me know.  I will do my best to set it straight.  Thanks.

Uphill Access Update

Over 300 people have obtained Uphill Access Passes this season.  Thanks to all of you that have participated in the program.  Obviously this is a quickly growing part of the ski experience at A-Basin.  Almost every uphill user that I have communicated with has provided great insight and support for our efforts to manage the program in a productive and fun way.

We have some good news on uphill access during operational hours.  Beginning tomorrow, Thursday, the terrain park will be moved to its normal Treeline location on the Upper Mountain.  The new park location will open Saturday.  This allows us to open uphill access during operational hours.  This program is new this season.  Remember, uphill users during operational hours must stay on the East side of High Noon and are not allowed above Black Mountain Lodge.

Again, thanks to everyone who participated in our planning sessions and thanks to everyone who worked collaboratively to make uphill access a success at The Basin.

Happy 2013

We heralded in the New Year last night in Black Mountain Lodge.  Chef Rybak and crew did it again, extraordinary apps, steak, lobster, chocolate mousse, and more.  There was music, dancing, and general mayhem.  Everyone closed out the evening with a near full moon ride down Black Mountain Express.  Pretty cool.
