Bluebird Day

Another beautiful day on the mountain. Last night the temps were a little colder than expected so we made a bit of snow. Sometimes the journey to opening is a few giant steps, sometimes it is many small steps, sometimes it is both. This year is both.

I'm placing bets on next Friday for Opening Day just to let you know Al.

What's nice is you can make big piles and let them drain for days. It's a GOOD thing!

Staff scheduling for snowmaking has to be interesting. Do you gaurentee them 40 hours then pay them overtime when they work it? What do they do during the downtime between warm weather spells? Going from running the guns 48 hours non-stop to a few hours here or there doesn't provide a stable income. How do you control cost, while keeping some of the hardest and best snow makers in the business on staff and give them a reliable wage? Maybe I am over thinking it and "it is what it is".

Its not just snowmaking. A lot of staff is on hold till opening. Ticket sales, food and beverage, base area, lift ops, patrol, etc etc. It's the nature of the beast.

Just watched the news a few hours ago and heard from al himself on the screen that the basin may open any day now. He's just waiting for 2 more cold nights for snowmaking and then the place will open. I think opening is closer than you all think. The snow levels on high noon like to be a few feet deep in some areas not condensed because the cats haven't been out yet. Well, who knows. Depends on the water and snow density the snow guns are set to. There usually making dense snow at the beginning of the season to create a good base for skiers and also on dense to create jumps and things like that for terrain parks. Expect an opening within the next week.
