Lenawee Will Open Friday

Lenawee Mountain Lift will open tomorrow, Friday October 25 about mid-morning. The chairlift will serve Lenawee Face and Dercum's Gulch. As the photos show, this will be an exceptional opening. The timing of this year's Upper Mountain Opening could not have worked out better. Streamflows, reservoir levels, and temperatures have been ideal for the last 2 weeks. This is also a very early upper mountain opening.  I believe the earliest since a legendary early winter back in the early 1960's. Tomorrow's opening will be about 2-3 weeks ahead of what we have experienced since the installation of snowmaking in 2002.

Enjoy.

I remember my dad talking about that early season opening you mention of the 1960s. He said that was one of the best seasons he could remember.

That's great! I'll be making my first trip out from Denver this Sunday.

So are you saying you didn't make snow before 2002? I had no idea!

No uphill access just yet, but we are much closer.

I always wondered if the upper terrain could open first and then the lower mountain. They do this back in New England at several resorts where it can be difficult to make snow at the bottom due to warmer temps. Also Copper seems to fire up snowmaking for the US olympic team on the upper mountain before making snow down to the base.

Could ABasin open even earlier if focusing on the upper terrain first where nightly temps dip lower in September? And then using the Black Mountain Express to download? (Or hike back to the base) This would put the snow making elevation from 11500-12450' roughly where it should be colder earlier on...

I'm curious - is there a webpage that shows A-Basin's historical opening and closing dates?

I have wondered the same thing as the previous anonymous poster who asked about reversing the order of snow making and using BMX for downloading. Has that been considered?

Al, you put up the best photos of this resort! Much appreciated as it gets all of the skiers and boarders pumped for the new areas that are about to open! Thanks for the progress!

Over the next few days I will write a post on snowmaking strategy and on historical dates.
