Last week Arapahoe Basin was awarded the 2014 Ski Magazine Golden Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence for medium sized ski areas. Specifically, the award recognized our waste reduction plan. Through composting and recycling, A-Basin has diverted 115,000 pounds of waste away from the landfill over the last two years. The diversion converts to an annual reduction in green house gas emissions of 28.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
It has been especially fun watching our guests learn how to use the composting facilities. Being an environmental champion is often challenging, tough, and dirty work. We are lucky to have two champions driving our sustainability efforts. Sha Miklas is our Guest Services and Environmental Manager and Mike Nathan is our Sustainability Coordinator. The two have done an exceptional job keeping our program moving forward. If you get a chance, please give them both a special thanks.
